The Manda buffalo has made headlines recently for its recognition as the 19th unique breed of buffaloes found in India. This announcement comes from the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), an entity responsible for cataloging and conserving India’s rich livestock and poultry genetic resources. The bureau previously recognized four breeds of cattle – Binjharpuri, Motu, Ghumusari, Khariar- two breeds of buffalo – Chilika and Kalahandi, along with one breed of sheep, Kendrapada.
Manda Buffaloes: Habitat and Utility
Originating from the Eastern Ghats and plateau of the Koraput region in Odisha, Manda Buffaloes are small yet sturdy animals used primarily for ploughing. Their resilience and adaptability to their native habitat play a significant part in their livelihood and utility in local agricultural practices.
Distinct Characteristics of Manda Buffaloes
Beyond their physical usefulness, Manda buffaloes also portray fascinating aesthetic characteristics that make them distinctive from other buffalo breeds. They possess ash grey and grey coats coupled with copper-coloured hair. Some individuals within this breed even have a silver white colour – a trait that further underlines their uniqueness.
The Speciality of the Manda Breed
Perhaps one of the most remarkable traits of the Manda breed revolves around their biological resistance. These buffaloes are resistant to parasitic infections, less prone to diseases, and capable of living, producing, and reproducing at low or nil input systems. This resilience adds to their value both in terms of survival and in terms of agricultural productivity.
The Significance of Recognition for the Manda Breed
The recognition of the Manda breed by NBAGR is likely to trigger conservation efforts from the state and central governments. These efforts aim to safeguard this unique buffalo genetic resource, enhance its productivity through strategic breeding, and promote the farm produce – milk, curd, ghee- for a premium price. It can, in turn, result in an improved livelihood for stakeholders in the native tract.
About NBAGR and Its Role
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) -National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal (ICAR-NBAGR) holds responsibility for registering newly identified germplasm of livestock and poultry across the country. Identification, evaluation, characterization, conservation, and sustainable utilization of livestock and poultry genetic resources fall within their mandate. In fulfilling these objectives, NBAGR plays a critical role in preserving India’s biodiversity and boosting agricultural prosperity.
