Matsya Vahini e-autorickshaws

Matsya Vahini e-autorickshaws

The Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) is set to revolutionize the lives of fishermen in the state with its innovative Matsya Vahini e-autorickshaw initiative. The project, under the Pradhan Mantri Matsyasampada Yojana, aims to empower fishermen by providing them with state-of-the-art e-autorickshaws equipped with freezers and essentials to sell fresh fish and value-added fish products.

Pilot Project in Bengaluru

The Matsya Vahini e-autorickshaw project will kickstart its pilot phase in Bengaluru, where 150 specially designed vehicles will be distributed to selected fishermen beneficiaries identified by the Fisheries Department. Each e-autorickshaw comes with a price tag of ₹8 lakh. The pilot project aims to test the feasibility and effectiveness of the initiative in the state’s capital city

Empowering Fishermen with Technology

The e-autorickshaws are not just ordinary vehicles; they are equipped with freezers and other essentials required for selling fresh fish and value-added products. Fishermen can now offer not only fresh catch but also ‘chakkuli’ and pickles made from fish, creating new avenues for their business. This integration of technology empowers the fishermen to reach a wider customer base and increase their revenue streams.

Lease Basis for Affordable Access

To ensure maximum participation and inclusivity, KFDC will own the e-autorickshaws and offer them to fishermen on a lease basis. The monthly rent for each vehicle will be ₹3,000, and beneficiaries will need to pay a refundable deposit of ₹2 lakh (₹1.5 lakh for SC/ST beneficiaries). This nominal amount enables fishermen from diverse economic backgrounds to partake in the initiative.

Path to Ownership

The Matsya Vahini scheme presents a unique opportunity for beneficiaries to eventually own the e-autorickshaws. After successfully operating the vehicles continuously for five years, subject to ratification by the Fisheries Department, the fishermen will have the chance to become proud owners of these vehicles. This provision further motivates the beneficiaries to invest their efforts and dedication into the success of their businesses.

Expansion across Karnataka

Following the successful implementation of the pilot project in Bengaluru, the Matsya Vahini initiative will be extended to other regions within Karnataka. This expansion will enable more fishermen across the state to benefit from the scheme, boosting fish sales and economic growth in the fishing sector. It is a promising step towards transforming the lives of fishermen and improving their socio-economic conditions.

Karnataka’s Fisheries Sector Growth

Karnataka has been making significant progress in fish exports and currently holds the seventh position in the country. The state’s coastal geography and thriving fishing communities have contributed to its success in the fisheries sector. The Matsya Vahini e-autorickshaw scheme will further amplify this growth by providing advanced tools and technology to the fishing community.

College of Fisheries: Empowering Fishermen Entrepreneurs

The College of Fisheries has been playing a pivotal role in empowering fishermen with knowledge and skills in fish processing and value addition. The institution organized a three-day training workshop on “Fish processing and value addition fish products,” benefitting over 800 fishermen who subsequently became successful entrepreneurs. The college’s willingness to share technology and knowledge in the preparation and marketing of fish-based pickles and other edible products enhances the overall impact of the Matsya Vahini initiative.
