Mission Amrit Sarovar Enhances Water Security in India

In a recent update, the Ministry of Rural Development has shed light on the progress made in the implementation of the campaign known as Mission Amrit Sarovar. This initiative is primarily focused on improving water security in different parts of the country.

Understanding Mission Amrit Sarovar

Launched on April 24, 2022, as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ – a celebration commemorating India’s 75th Independence year, Mission Amrit Sarovar aims to construct or rejuvenate at least 75 water bodies, referred to as Amrit Sarovars, in every district across India. This effort is designed to alleviate the water crisis experienced in rural regions of the country. The mission’s target signifies a significant stride towards guaranteeing water sustainability at the local level.

A consortium of eight Central Ministries and Departments, including the Department of Rural Development, Department of Land Resources, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Department of Water Resources, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Changes, Ministry of Railway, and Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways, are actively involved in implementing this mission.

The Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Application and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N), an autonomous scientific society under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has been appointed as the technical partner for Mission Amrit Sarovar. Geospatial data and technology have a critical role in identifying suitable sites for constructing and rejuvenating Amrit Sarovars.

Progress and Accomplishments of the Mission

As of now, construction or rejuvenation has commenced for over 81,000 Amrit Sarovars out of more than 1 lakh identified. A total of over 66,000 Amrit Sarovars have been successfully constructed or restored. These figures indicate that the national target of 50,000 Amrit Sarovars has been achieved, demonstrating the dedication and effectiveness of the mission.

Challenges and Advancements in Different States

Several states have made commendable progress towards achieving the goal of creating 75 Amrit Sarovars in each district. Some regions, including West Bengal, Punjab, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Bihar, and Rajasthan, are continuing their efforts towards reaching this target.

Optimizing Resources

Mission Amrit Sarovar effectively utilizes existing schemes and financial grants to achieve its objectives. Resource mobilization for the execution of the mission is facilitated through the channelization of schemes like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana sub-schemes, and various state-specific initiatives.

Promoting Local Participation

In addition to government initiatives, Mission Amrit Sarovar encourages citizen engagement and collaboration with non-governmental institutions. Community involvement is fostered to garner additional support for the cause.

A Collaborative Approach towards Water Security

The success of Mission Amrit Sarovar is a testament to a collaborative approach that involves governmental departments, technical partners, and local communities. This comprehensive approach focuses on transforming the water landscape, enhancing livelihoods, and ensuring water accessibility for future generations.
