Mission Indradhanush 5.0 (IMI 5.0) Targets Measles and Rubella Vaccination

Mission Indradhanush 5.0 (IMI 5.0) Targets Measles and Rubella Vaccination

Mission Indradhanush 5.0 (IMI 5.0), a critical campaign, is working towards expanding routine immunization services to reach children and pregnant women who may have missed previous vaccinations.

Expanding Reach: Covering All Districts and a Wider Age Group

IMI 5.0 marks a remarkable shift in India’s vaccination efforts as it extends its reach to every district in the country.  IMI 5.0 includes children up to 5 years old, thus ensuring that a broader section of the population receives vital immunizations.

Primary Goal: Enhancing Immunization Coverage

The primary goal of IMI 5.0 is to enhance immunization coverage for all vaccines provided under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) following the National Immunization Schedule (NIS). The campaign places a particular emphasis on improving vaccination coverage for two crucial diseases – Measles and Rubella – with the objective of achieving their elimination by 2023.

Leveraging Technology: U-WIN Digital Platform

In a technological leap, IMI 5.0 employs the U-WIN digital platform for Routine Immunization in a pilot mode across all districts in India. This digital initiative facilitates streamlined record-keeping, monitoring, and tracking of vaccine administration.

Campaign Structure

The IMI 5.0 campaign consists of three rounds, conducted over six days each month, with the addition of a Routine Immunization Day. This well-structured approach aims to ensure comprehensive vaccine coverage among the targeted population.

Encouraging Public Participation

IMI 5.0 has seen active participation from various stakeholders, including Jan pratinidhis (community representatives) and social media influencers from all states and union territories. Their efforts play a pivotal role in encouraging the public to visit the nearest vaccination centers and ensuring that children and pregnant women receive any missed doses.

Impressive Impact

As of September 30, 2023, during the first two rounds of IMI 5.0, over 34,69,705 children and 6,55,480 pregnant women have received vaccine doses across the country. This demonstrates the campaign’s efficacy in reaching a substantial portion of the intended beneficiaries.

Milestones Achieved

Since its inception in 2014, Mission Indradhanush has witnessed 11 phases of completion, with the 12th phase currently underway. Cumulatively, this initiative has benefited 5.06 crore children and 1.25 crore pregnant women, ensuring they receive essential vaccinations.

Upcoming Conclusion

In the ongoing IMI 5.0 mission, all states and union territories, with the exception of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Punjab, aim to conclude all three rounds by October 14. Due to certain unavoidable circumstances, these four states have initiated the first and second rounds and plan to conduct the third round in November.

A Significant Stride Towards Public Health

IMI 5.0 exemplifies the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health of the nation. By prioritizing the immunization of every child and pregnant woman and focusing on Measles and Rubella, this campaign takes a significant step towards eliminating these preventable diseases, thereby securing a healthier future for all.
