Multi-model Logistics Park Planned in Silchar

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways has recently announced the construction of a multi-modal logistics park in Silchar, Assam. He also announced that the Harengajao-Balacherra section of the Silchar-Saurashtra Highway will be completed by March 2022.

What is a Multi-Modal Logistics Park?

Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) are the parks that are constructed at selected locations with an aim to improve the country’s logistics sector by reducing vehicular pollution and congestion, overall freight costs, and cutting warehousing costs. It is an initiative of the Indian Government and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is developing these logistics parks.

  • This announcement of Logistics Park was made at a meeting at Zero Point on the East-West Corridor.
  • The minister also unveiled a bronze statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the occasion. The statue is 13-foot tall.
  • Multi-Modal Logistics Park will be constructed in Assam’s Silchar and East-West Corridor construction will be accelerated. Along with this, two new bridges will be made over the Barak River.
  • The minister has also asked the Assam CM to send a proposal for a project of Rs 250 crore in the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Fund for the Barak Valley.

The Minister laid down the foundation stone for 20 projects and inaugurated 7 projects of Rs 2,366 crore for Assam.
