Naik Yeshwant Ghadge: India’s Unsung Hero of World War II

On October 11, 2023, India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, paid tribute at the VC Yeshwant Ghadge Sundial Memorial in Montone, Italy, a solemn reminder of the participation of Indian soldiers in the campaign to liberate Italy during World War II. The heroism of these soldiers, often overlooked, recently found recognition through this memorial.

Naik Yeshwant Ghadge’s Heroic Sacrifice

Naik Yeshwant Ghadge, a young Indian soldier not yet 23 years old, met his demise in Montone, Italy, during World War II. Leading his own rifle section with the rank of Naik, he displayed extraordinary courage. In July 1944, his unit came under heavy enemy fire, resulting in the injury or death of every soldier except Ghadge. Despite the odds stacked against him, he charged a machine gun post, disabled it with a grenade, and eliminated the crew. Even as enemy snipers wounded him fatally, he captured the post, displaying unwavering bravery. For his exceptional valor, Naik Ghadge was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), Britain’s highest military honor.

The Italian Campaign of World War II

The Italian campaign of World War II, spanning from 1943 to 1945, involved the Allied forces countering the Axis Powers, which included Nazi Germany and Italy. The Allied strategy aimed to knock Italy out of the war and progress into the Italian peninsula, a campaign with its share of challenges.

The Role of Indian Soldiers

The Indian Army, under British command, contributed over 2.5 million soldiers to the Allied war effort. In the Italian campaign, approximately 50,000 Indian soldiers participated, with 5,782 making the ultimate sacrifice on Italian soil. The Indian Army, represented by divisions like the 4th, 8th, and 10th, played a significant role in pivotal battles, such as Monte Cassino and breaching the Gothic Line, marking a relentless and commendable effort.

Acknowledging India’s Contributions

The Indian Army’s growing professionalism and its achievements in the Italian campaigns did not go unnoticed by Allied commanders. Indian troops often led the charge, demonstrating their dedication and mettle on the battlefield.
