National Conference on Agriculture Highlights Record Crop Production

The Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare recently initiated the ‘National Conference on Agriculture for Rabi Campaign 2019.’ The key discourse at the Conference emphasized on the all-time high production of staples like rice, wheat, pulses and oilseeds. This achievement was attributed to the effective cooperation between Centre and State. However, concerns were shared about the shortage of oilseeds and a future mission was suggested to augment its production and decrease imports of edible oils.

Need for Timely Demand and Availability of Fertilizers

Placing emphasis on farmer organizations, the Minister urged consultations to assess fertilizer requisites at the district level. The aim is to ensure sufficient availability of fertilizers at critical stages of crop production.

With active collaboration from State Agriculture Departments, seed mini-kits for rabi crops, pulses and oilseeds will be distributed to farmers. This initiative is expected to support farmers in various regions and promote optimal yield.

Revamping Rural Credit Framework – The Kisan Credit Card

In view of the agricultural slowdown, the government has implemented several changes aimed at easing the burden on farmers. Notably, the Kisan Credit Card system underwent substantial modifications. Changes include waiver of the registration fee, reduced time for issuance of Kisan Credit Cards, and expanding the loan spectrum. These steps are expected to benefit a vast number of farmers.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)

The government has also been soliciting feedback from State Agriculture Departments for an improved review mechanism of the PMFBY. This scheme, launched in 2016, aims to offer farmers insurance cover against crop failures. The uniform premium structure ensures affordability for farmers, thereby securing their livelihoods during uncertain periods.

Steps to Ensure Maximum Benefit to Farmers

The minister marked the importance of a strong Lab to Land connect to ensure maximum benefit to farmers. In this regard, the State Agriculture Departments were asked to provide support for strengthening the seed hubs. A Fertilizer Awareness Drive is also to be organized with the onset of Rabi season which will enhance crop yield by informing farmers about the ideal sowing time and weather conditions.

Introduction of Biofortified Varieties

The Conference also witnessed the release of 45 biofortified varieties with an enhanced percentage of nutrients and proteins. These innovative seed types are expected to boost both the nutritional quality and overall production of crops.
