National Fish Farmers Day Webinar Highlights Fisheries Growth

Recently, a webinar took place involving the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, in collaboration with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB). The occasion was National Fish Farmers Day, a yearly event celebrated on the 10th of July.

National Fish Farmers Day: A Tribute to Pioneering Scientists

National Fish Farmers Day pays homage to scientists Dr. K.H. Alikunhi and Dr. H.L. Chaudhury, who successfully demonstrated Hypophysation (a technology of induced breeding) in Indian Major Carps, various species of fish, on 10th July 1957. This day serves as an opportunity to recognize the efforts and contributions of fish farmers, aquapreneurs (entrepreneurs in the water sector), and fisherfolks in progressing the fisheries sector within the country.

Objectives of National Fish Farmers Day

The main goal of this occasion is to showcase the achievements of individuals in the fisheries industry. It also promotes attention towards changing how the country manages fisheries resources, ensuring sustainable stocks and healthy ecosystems.

The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)

As a part of the initiative to push the Blue Revolution, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) was launched. This scheme’s primary objective is to sustainably develop the fisheries sector.

Fish Cryobanks: An Innovative Approach

A collaborative effort by NFDB and the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) will see the establishment of fish cryobanks across different regions in the country. The Cryomilt technology might be instrumental in setting up these fish cryobanks, which aim to provide top-quality fish sperm in hatcheries all year round. This is the first instance worldwide where Fish Cryobanks will be set up, anticipated to boost fish production and bring prosperity to fish farmers.

About National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)

The NFDB was established in 2006 as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s administrative control. It now operates under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Its mandate includes augmenting fish production and productivity in the country and coordinating fishery development in a holistic manner.

National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR)

Under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the NBFGR was launched in December 1983. Its primary roles include the exploration, characterization, and cataloguing of fish genetic resources. It also maintains and preserves fish genetic resources for the conservation and utilization of prioritized species. Additionally, it handles the evaluation of indigenous and exotic germplasm, risk assessment, and fish health management.

The various initiatives and organizations in India’s fisheries sector aim not only to increase production but also ensure sustainability and preservation of resources. The success of these endeavors will largely depend on their effective implementation and the participation of all stakeholders involved.
