The National Commission for Women (NCW), in partnership with CyberPeace Foundation and Meta, has recently unveiled the fourth installment of its Digital Shakti Campaign. This initiative, established in June 2018, seeks to enhance knowledge and awareness among women nationwide regarding digital technology as well as its usage. The project offers support to women regarding reporting and redressal procedures, information privacy, and leveraging technology for their betterment.
Digital Shakti: A Brief Overview
The Digital Shakti initiative originated in 2018 with a vision of improving women’s understanding of technology throughout the nation. It focuses on raising awareness regarding how to effectively use the digital platform. The initiative educates women about the procedures for filing complaints, ensuring data privacy, and optimally utilizing technology for advantageous outcomes.
Following the successful initiation of the three phases, the third of which was launched in Leh in March 2021, Digital Shakti is now moving into its fourth iteration.
Focus and Goals of Digital Shakti 4.0
Digital Shakti 4.0 aims to empower women by providing them with digital skills and increasing their awareness to resist any illegal or inappropriate activities occurring online. The primary objective of this phase is to ensure that cyber spaces remain safe environments for women.
Milestone Achievements of the Digital Shakti Project
The Digital Shakti campaign has already positively impacted over 300,000 women across India. These women have received crucial insights into online security measures, complaint filing, and redressal processes, along with an understanding of data privacy and beneficial ways of using technology.
National Commission for Women: An Introduction
Formed as a statutory organization in January 1992 through the National Commission for Women Act, 1990, the NCW has a mission to enable women to achieve equality and participate equally in every sphere of life. To accomplish this, it works toward securing women’s rights and entitlements using suitable policy formulations, legislative measures, and more.
Key Functions of the National Commission for Women
The NCW has several significant roles, which include reviewing constitutional and legal protections for women. It recommends corrective legislative actions and aids in addressing grievances. It also provides advice to the government on policy matters affecting women.
The NCW’s commitment to safeguarding women’s rights and entitlements, and its efforts towards creating safe digital spaces, are reflected in the launch of the recent Digital Shakti 4.0 initiative. The campaign continues to promote cyber safety and digitally empower women across India, demonstrating that technology can be a powerful tool for change when used properly.
