New Bent-Toed Gecko Species Discovered in Meghalaya

The recent discovery of a new species of bent-toed gecko in Meghalaya has brought the world’s attention to this diverse group of lizard. A team of herpetologists discovered this unique new inhabitant in a woodland area of the Umroi Military Station. The gecko has been scientifically named Crytodactylus exercitus, and fittingly dubbed as the Indian Army’s bent-toed gecko. In another related find, a bent-toed gecko named Cyrtodactylus siahaensis was discovered in Mizoram’s Siaha district. Herpetologists, scientists specializing in the study of reptiles and amphibians, have been instrumental in these discoveries.

Understanding Geckos

Geckos are a unique group of reptiles found on every continent except for Antarctica. They exhibit an array of brilliant colors and have adapted to a wide swath of habitats, ranging from humid rainforests to scorching deserts and chilly mountain slopes. Over a considerable span of time, geckos have evolved exceptional physical attributes that aid their survival and allow them to elude predators.

The Multi-purpose Tails

One such feature is their tail, which serves several functions. It provides balance as they traverse branches and acts as a reservoir for fat storage. Additionally, the tail acts as effective camouflage, enabling geckos to blend seamlessly with their surroundings. In a remarkable adaptation strategy, geckos can shed their tails when under threat from predators.

Nocturnal Lifestyle and Diet

Most gecko species are nocturnal, remaining active at night. Day geckos are an exception to this rule, however, and prefer activity during daylight hours. They feed primarily on insects, fruits, and flower nectar.

Remarkable Communication

Another fascinating aspect of geckos is their ability to produce specific sounds for communication. They create noises, such as chirping, barking, and clicking when protecting their territory or when attempting to attract a mate.

Species and Endangered Status

Geckos are not a monolithic group; instead, they encompass many different species. The level of endangerment varies by species, ranging from those who exist with relative safety to those teetering on the brink of extinction.

These recent discoveries serve to remind us of the wondrous biological diversity present in our natural world and underscore the importance of continued research in understanding and protecting these creatures.
