New Deep Water Fish Species Discovered in West Bengal

A recent scientific discovery has sparked interest and excitement in the marine biology community. Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have identified a new species of deep-water fish exhibiting a vibrant orange coloration. This novel species was discovered in Digha Mohana, a region in West Bengal.

The Newly Unearthed Fish Species: Pterygotrigla Intermedica

The newly discovered species is part of the family Triglidae, more commonly known as gurnards or sea-robins. Named Pterygotrigla Intermedica, this fish exhibits characteristics closely aligned with those of its relatives such as the Pterygotrigla hemistictus. The Triglidae family encompasses 178 distinctive species worldwide.

Unique Features of Pterygotrigla Intermedica

Pterygotrigla Intermedica possesses several distinguishing traits that make it stand out among other members of the Triglidae family. One notable characteristic is its distinct pectoral-fin featuring black membranes on the inner surface, a contrasting white posterior margin, and three small white spots at the base of the fin.

Significance of the Discovery for Indian Marine Ecosystem

This discovery adds to the aquatic biodiversity of India, marking the fourth species of the genus “Pterygotrigla” reported in the country. This new marine life addition underscores India’s rich contribution to marine biodiversity, furthering our understanding of unique ecosystems in Indian waters.

About the Zoological Survey of India

The ZSI, established in 1916, functions under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The organization serves as a national center dedicated primarily to the faunistic survey and exploration of resources. Its main goal is to advance knowledge about the rich faunal diversity residing within India’s borders. The ZSI headquarters are located in Kolkata, with 16 regional stations dispersed across various geographical locations within the country.

Previous Discoveries by Indian Scientists

Indian scientists have a history of unveiling new, distinctive species. In a previous endeavor from 2016, researchers discovered a unique species of banana plant that grows up to 11 meters tall and produces fruit with orange pulp. This plant species was found in the Andaman Islands. This earlier discovery, like the recent fish revelation, highlights the exceptional biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent.
