New Jumping Spider Species Discovered in Pune

Recent studies in Pune have led to the discovery of a new species of jumping spider. This important finding emerged from the research of Atharva Kulkarni, a post-graduate student in environmental science. While studying the biodiversity of spiders on Baner Hill, he identified the species, which has been named Okinawicius tekdi. This name pays homage to the hill, as “tekdi” means hill in Marathi. The discovery adds to the biodiversity knowledge of the region and marks the importance of local ecological studies.

Discovery Context

Atharva Kulkarni was conducting research on February 6, 2023. His focus was on the diversity of spiders in the Baner hills. During his study, he encountered a male spider on a Ficus tree. This prompted him to search for a female, which took considerable time due to its camouflage. Kulkarni’s dedication to documenting the species led him to enlist the help of a friend for photography.

Identification Process

After collecting a specimen, Kulkarni sent it to Rishikesh Tripathi for further analysis. Tripathi, an experienced arachnologist, conducted a morphological study. His findings confirmed that Okinawicius tekdi is a new species. This adds to the existing knowledge of the Okinawicius genus, which was first described in India in 2016.

Morphological Characteristics

Okinawicius tekdi is distinguished by unique morphological features. Notably, the female genitalia exhibit membranous coils in the copulatory ducts. These coils lie parallel to the surface, a characteristic that differentiates it from other species. The identification of these features was crucial in confirming its status as a new species.

Significance of the Discovery

The discovery of Okinawicius tekdi puts stress on the rich biodiversity present in urban areas like Pune. It marks the role of academic research in uncovering new species. Such findings can contribute to conservation efforts and raise awareness about the ecological importance of local habitats.

Questions for UPSC:

  1. Discuss the significance of biodiversity in urban ecosystems and its implications for conservation efforts.
  2. Critically examine the role of academic research in species discovery and its impact on environmental science.
  3. Explain the morphological characteristics that are used to identify new spider species with suitable examples.
  4. What are the challenges faced by researchers in documenting biodiversity in urban areas? Discuss with examples.
