The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed an agreement with 200 technical institutes for encouraging them for voluntary adoption of highway stretches for research etc. This was informed to the Parliament on February 8, 2021.

- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started an initiative to connect with reputed technical Institutes such as IITs, NITs, and AICTE approved engineering colleges for mutual cooperation in the dissemination of respective expertise on civil/highway engineering on National Highway Projects.
- Out of more than 250 such institutes have given their consent for signing this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
- This number of 250 is divided into 27 NITs, 18 IITs, and 207 other reputed engineering colleges.
- Out of these 250, 200 have signed the agreement.
- As per the NHAI initiative, the institutes will be encouraged to adopt nearby stretches of national highways on a voluntary basis and use them as a field of study for faculty, researchers and to familiarize students with the latest trends in the industry.
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)
It is a government agency that is responsible for the management of a network of more than 50,000 km of National Highways in India. At present, the National Highways stretch of the country is 1, 15,000 km. NHAI is the nodal agency of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. It was formed in the year 1995.
NHAI starts planning for Bharatmala Phase II
NHAI has identified roads of around 5000 km that will be built under the Bharatmala Phase II project. Bharatmala is a scheme for building roads and highways in the country. It is a centrally sponsored scheme.
