NMDC to Resume Mining, Stabilize Iron Ore Prices in Karnataka

The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is preparing to recommence mining activities in the Donimalai area of Bellari district, Karnataka. This move is anticipated to increase the supply of iron ore and subsequently cause a drop in prices. This development comes at a time when many sponge iron and pellet manufacturers in the state have ceased operations due to escalating costs and waning demand.

About National Mineral Development Corporation

Inaugurated in 1958 as a fully-owned public enterprise of the Government of India, NMDC operates under the administrative oversight of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. Since its origin, NMDC has been engaged in the exploration of an extensive variety of minerals inclusive of iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite, and beach sands among others.

Presently, NMDC stands as India’s sole largest iron ore producer, generating approximately 35 million tonnes of iron ore. The Department of Public Enterprises categorized NMDC as a “Navratna” Public Sector Enterprise in 2008 for its significant contributions to the industry. The corporation’s corporate office is headquartered in Hyderabad.

Donimalai Mining Suspension: A Backstory

Donimalai mine has been under the ownership of NMDC since 1968. However, operational activities were suspended in November 2018 after the Karnataka government demanded an 80% premium on iron mined to renew its lease for another two decades.

NMDC’s Noteworthy Contributions

Year Contribution
1958 Incorporated as a fully-owned public enterprise of the Government of India
1968 Began operations at Donimalai mine
2008 Categorized as a “Navratna” Public Sector Enterprise by the Department of Public Enterprises
Present India’s single largest iron ore producer with an output of approximately 35 million tonnes per annum

Impact of Resuming Mining Operations in Donimalai

This decision to restart mining in Donimalai is projected to significantly affect the iron ore market. The reinitiation of operations will increase the availability of iron ore which was previously strained due to cost inflation and dwindling demand from sponge iron and pellet manufacturers in Karnataka. This increase in iron ore supply is likely to cause a reduction in prices, providing a much-needed respite to manufacturers nationwide.

The development holds profound importance considering NMDC’s stature as India’s leading iron ore producer. The impact of this decision will thus be felt industry-wide, demonstrating the influential role NMDC plays in India’s mineral sector.
