Northeast Infrastructure Boost: Nitin Gadkari’s Key Projects and Future Plans

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled a series of crucial infrastructure projects in India’s Northeast region, emphasizing their significance in fostering development, job creation, and poverty reduction. This article provides an overview of the completed and upcoming projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic growth in the region.

Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP)

  • The KMTTP is a collaborative effort between India and Myanmar, with a budget of US$484 million.
  • Its primary objective is to establish a multi-modal transport system, connecting eastern Indian ports with Myanmar and the Northeastern part of India through Myanmar.
  • A cross-border road, costing Rs 1,132 crore, will link South Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district with Myanmar’s Sittwe port, set for completion by November this year.

Upcoming Projects in Northeast

  1. Aizawl-Tuipang Road (373 km):
    • This Rs 7,361-crore project is expected to link six districts of Mizoram with Myanmar.
    • It aims to boost economic growth, trade, and employment opportunities.
    • The project is slated for completion by June next year.
  2. Aizawl Bypass Road:
    • To address traffic congestion in the state capital, Aizawl, a bypass road is planned.
    • The project, with a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, includes a 35 km stretch and a 2.5 km tunnel.
    • Completion is expected by December 2025.
  3. Silchar to Vairengte-Sairang Road (NH-306):
    • Delays in the construction of the four-lane road are attributed to issues between the revenue and forest departments of the state government.
    • Gadkari has highlighted the need for resolving these land-related challenges to expedite the project.
