Ocean Ring of Yoga: Promoting Unity and Well-being

To commemorate International Day of Yoga (IDY) 23, the Ministry of AYUSH has organized a special event called the ‘Ocean Ring of Yoga.’ This initiative symbolizes unity and solidarity, spreading the message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family). As part of this event, Indian Navy ships stationed in the Indian Ocean Region are visiting friendly foreign nations to promote the practice of yoga and foster a healthy lifestyle. The objective of the Ocean Ring of Yoga is to engage personnel from host countries and India in yoga sessions, enhancing mutual understanding and well-being.

Reaching Foreign Shores: Spreading Yoga Worldwide

Under the Ocean Ring of Yoga initiative, nine Indian Navy ships have embarked on a journey spanning over 35,000 kilometers. Ships such as Kiltan, Chennai, Shivalik, Sunayna, Trishul, Tarkash, Vagir, Sumitra, and Brahmaputra are making port calls at various foreign destinations, including Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Oman, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. Yoga sessions are being conducted at these ports, providing an opportunity for naval personnel to experience the benefits of yoga and promote the practice globally.

Promoting Yoga Globally: Collaborative Efforts

The Ocean Ring of Yoga initiative goes beyond the Indian Navy itself. Collaborating with India’s overseas missions, the navy has engaged with foreign navies to celebrate the International Day of Yoga. Over 1,200 foreign navy personnel from different countries are expected to participate in yoga activities onboard their respective ships. This collaborative effort strengthens the bonds between nations and highlights the universal appeal of yoga in promoting physical and mental well-being.

Emphasizing the Common Yoga Protocol: A Universal Framework

During their visits to foreign ports, Indian Navy ships are focusing on promoting the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP). The CYP is a set of yogic practices designed to be accessible and beneficial for people of all ages and fitness levels. By promoting the CYP, the Indian Navy aims to familiarize individuals from different countries with a common framework of yoga exercises, reinforcing the global unity inherent in the practice.

Celebrating Yoga within the Navy: A Comprehensive Engagement

Yoga awareness campaigns have been launched across naval ports, bases, ships, and establishments, encouraging maximum participation by naval personnel, defense civilians, and their families. Initiatives like “Har Angaan Yoga” have been widely promoted within the navy to ensure a comprehensive engagement with yoga. These efforts not only benefit the individual participants but also create a sense of unity and well-being within the naval community.

The International Day of Yoga: A Global Celebration

The International Day of Yoga was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on June 21 following a resolution moved by India, with support from numerous countries. Since its inception in 2015, the International Day of Yoga has gained global recognition and serves as a platform to promote the ancient practice of yoga. It emphasizes the holistic benefits of yoga, encompassing physical fitness, mental well-being, and spiritual growth.
