Odisha Begins Development of First ‘Plastic Park’

Recent reports reveal that Odisha has taken the lead to be the first Indian state to initiate the creation of a ‘Plastic Park’, designated within Jagatsinghpur district. This bold step is in response to the escalating demand for plastic materials within India’s burgeoning construction and infrastructure sectors.

India’s Rising Plastic Demand

India’s domestic production currently satisfies only half its demand for plastic, a material becoming increasingly prominent with the expansion of the construction and infrastructure sectors. Many construction companies have incorporated plastic materials into their architecture and design. The components used encompass everything from small items like plastic screws and hinges, to larger plastic parts utilized within interior decoration, electric wiring, floor coverings, wall coverings, waterproofing and so forth.

Action to Reduce Imports

To combat the need for excessive imports and support local industries, the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers (MoCF) crafted a scheme to establish four Plastic Parks across India. These are distributed in Assam (Tinsukia), Madhya Pradesh (Raisen), Odisha (Jagatsinghpur) and Tamil Nadu (Thiruvallur). Furthermore, two additional Plastic Parks situated in Jharkhand (Deogarh) and Madhya Pradesh (Bilaua) have been granted ‘final approval’ during the fiscal year 2018-19.

First Mover Advantage – Odisha

Odisha has marked a significant step for India’s plastic industry by becoming the first state to start developing a Plastic Park. Nestled within the Jagatsinghpur district, this initiative is expected to bolster local plastic production while simultaneously reducing dependency on imports. Additionally, it is deemed to provide an economic boost to the region by creating job opportunities and fostering industrial growth.
