Encapsulated by the Bay of Bengal, it spans across the Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam districts at the mouth of the Daya River. The lake covers a massive area of over 1,100 square kilometers.
Chilika: A Haven for Migratory Birds and Threatened Species
Interestingly, Chilika serves as the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. This makes it a significant spot for bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts. Additionally, the sprawling lake is home to numerous threatened species of plants and animals. In 1981, it earned recognition as India’s first wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Visitors flock to Chilika primarily for the charismatic Irrawady dolphins often spotted off Satpada Island. Another crowd-puller is the expansive Nalabana Island (Forest of Reeds) that sprawls over approximately 16 square km in the lagoon area.
