The Department for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and Invest India, in collaboration with the Department of Industries and Commerce, Nagaland, recently hosted the ODOP Sampark Event. Aimed at heightening awareness about the One District One Product (ODOP) and PM Gati Shakti initiatives, the event was an opportunity to highlight various initiatives designed to promote Indian products, particularly those from Nagaland, on the international market.
Major Highlights of the ODOP Sampark Event
A key aim of the ODOP Sampark Event was to enhance market access for Indian products. Several approaches were explored to improve logistics facilities supporting ODOP products from Nagaland. These include leveraging the Krishi UDAN scheme for better transportation and expanding railway connectivity. To further support these goals, the Union Budget 2023-24 allocated INR 5000 crores for the construction of Unity Malls, which are centralised marketplaces for ODOP products. The event also showcased various ODOP products from Nagaland, including chili, fish, coffee, and turmeric.
About the One District One Product Initiative
The ODOP initiative aims to stimulate economic growth by promoting and branding one product from each district of the country. Using local resources, skills, and culture, the initiative creates a unique identity for each district. Over 1000 products have been selected from all 761 districts nationwide, representing sectors such as textiles, agriculture, processed goods, pharmaceuticals, and industrial items.
The concept originated in Uttar Pradesh in January 2018, where it successfully rejuvenated traditional industries and crafts. Following this success, the Central government adopted the concept and launched it as a national initiative. Its implementation falls under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries for the food processing sector and the Ministry of Textile for textiles.
Significance of the ODOP Initiative
The ODOP initiative has a positive economic impact, strengthening the local economy by identifying and developing a unique product or craft for each district. The initiative encourages local entrepreneurship and skill development, fostering a culture of innovation. Moreover, it aims to preserve and promote traditional knowledge, crafts, and industries in each district.
Furthermore, it provides market linkages and creates a robust marketing ecosystem for local products. By leveraging the unique characteristics of each district’s product, the initiative helps create niche markets, increase exports, and boost the local economy. To acknowledge these efforts, DPIIT instituted the One District One Product Awards.
About PM Gati Shakti
PM Gati Shakti is a National Master Plan for Multi-modal Connectivity, bringing together 16 Ministries for integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects. It encompasses infrastructure schemes like Bharatmala, Sagarmala, inland waterways, dry/land ports, and UDAN.
These schemes aim to improve connectivity and enhance the competitiveness of Indian businesses. They include various economic zones such as textile clusters, pharmaceutical clusters, defence corridors, electronic parks, industrial corridors, fishing clusters, and agri zones. Furthermore, the plan utilizes technology extensively, including spatial planning tools with ISRO imagery developed by BiSAG-N, for transparency in monitoring current projects.
