One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) Initiative

A day-long conference in New Delhi recently focused on the “One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG)” initiative. Originating from a proposal by the Prime Minister of India at the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly in 2018, OSOWOG aims to link regional grids for efficient renewable energy transfer, particularly solar power. Spearheaded by India and the UK in collaboration with ISA and the World Bank Group, it intends to unite governments, financial organizations, legislators, and knowledge leaders to expedite clean energy infrastructure development. ISA, established in 2015, further supports global solar energy deployment with ambitious targets outlined in its ‘Towards 1000’ strategy.

Facts/Terms for UPSC Prelims

  • International Solar Alliance (ISA): An intergovernmental organization formed in 2015 to promote solar energy deployment worldwide, particularly in developing countries. It aims to mobilize investments, deliver energy access, install solar capacity, and reduce global emissions through solar technologies.
  • Renewable Energy: Energy derived from sources that are naturally replenished, such as sunlight, wind, and water, to reduce environmental impact and dependence on finite fossil fuels.
  • Grid Interconnections: The process of linking regional electrical grids to enhance the reliability and efficiency of energy distribution, enabling the transfer of surplus energy between regions.
  • Clean Energy Solutions: Technologies and practices that aim to minimize environmental impact and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, often involving renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower.
