A new development in the AI space is the recent launch of OpenAI’s most advanced AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which is being tested for its capabilities. The chatbot has demonstrated potential in various areas but has also raised some serious ethical issues.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a variant of Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a large-scale neural network-based language model developed by OpenAI. These models are trained using vast amounts of text data, enabling them to generate human-like text responses.
Its primary functions encompass a wide array of topics such as answering questions, providing explanations, and engaging in conversations. Furthermore, ChatGPT can also challenge false premises, admit mistakes, refuse unsuitable requests, and answer follow-up questions. This chatbot leverages Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) as part of its training process.
Identified Limitations of ChatGPT
Despite its innovative features, ChatGPT presents some noticeable limitations. For instance, it exhibits clear racial and sexist biases – a common issue with many AI models. Additionally, while the chatbot provides grammatically correct responses, they sometimes lack context and substance.
ChatGPT also tends to generate inaccurate information and its knowledge scope is limited to global events that happened prior to 2021.
Ethical Concerns Associated with ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s potential for malicious usage has raised multiple ethical concerns. Some users reported experimenting with the chatbot’s potential for harmful activities, even though they claimed to be beginners. Notably, the chatbot generated dangerous coding, contradicting the intention of its initial design.
Another alarming issue is the production of phishing emails. Although ChatGPT is programmed to reject requests to write malicious codes or phishing emails, it has been found to generate high-quality phishing emails.
There are concerns about potential biases in the generated data and information due to the biases present in the training data used to create the generator. This could lead to the creation of prejudiced output.
Additionally, the use of code generators like ChatGPT could potentially reduce job opportunities for human programmers, causing economic concerns.
Another significant concern is related to plagiarism. The chatbot’s ability to produce original writing complicates the identification of plagiarized information which could impact academic integrity.
Improving ChatGPT – The Way Forward
Despite these issues, there are several ways to enhance ChatGPT’s performance and mitigate its limitations. Some of these improvements include enhancing its contextual understanding and responses, increasing its knowledge base, developing more advanced language generation capabilities, and improving its understanding and response to different languages and dialects.
While the advancements of AI and chatbots such as ChatGPT hold immense potential, careful attention must be paid to address the associated ethical concerns in order to ensure they are used responsibly and effectively.
