In a joint effort to combat the illegal transportation of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and precursor chemicals, India and the United States recently launched ‘Operation Broader Sword.‘ This collaborative operation aims to disrupt the flow of illegal substances entering the United States from India through the International Mail System (IMS). By targeting packages entering through major International Mail Facilities, the operation seeks to safeguard citizens and enhance drug control efforts in both countries.
Operation Broader Sword: Disrupting Illegal Substance Flow
The primary objective of Operation Broader Sword is to disrupt the illegal transportation of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and precursor chemicals through the International Mail System from India to the United States. The operation focuses on packages entering the United States via the two major International Mail Facilities located at JFK International Airport in New York and ORD International Airport in Chicago.
Thorough Investigation and Action
During the operation, investigators conducted meticulous examinations of more than 1,500 shipments originating from India. Through their diligent efforts, they were able to take conclusive action on nearly 500 products. The operation specifically targeted illegal drugs intended to treat serious illnesses, with a particular emphasis on identifying shipments containing opioids and other controlled substances.
Safeguarding Citizens and Combating Drug Trafficking
Operation Broader Sword serves as a critical initiative to safeguard the citizens of both India and the United States. By jointly addressing the illegal transportation of substances, the operation aims to identify and target traffickers operating in or seeking to expand their activities in India. In doing so, it not only protects the populations of both countries but also assists Indian law enforcement agencies in strengthening measures to combat the flow of illicit drugs that could harm Indian citizens.
Collaboration of Multiple Agencies
The success of Operation Broader Sword is contingent on the collaboration between multiple agencies from India and the United States. The Department of Revenue Retail Investigation (DRI) represents India’s contribution to the operation. On the other hand, the United States agencies involved include the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS). This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive and coordinated effort to tackle the issue.
Enhancing Drug Control Efforts
Operation Broader Sword not only disrupts the flow of illegal substances but also has broader implications for drug control efforts. By working together, India and the United States can share intelligence, resources, and best practices to enhance their respective drug control measures. This collaboration promotes information sharing, strengthens enforcement capabilities, and improves coordination between agencies, leading to more effective outcomes in combating drug trafficking.
