Operation Jericho

Operation Jericho

During the early months of 1966, as the Mizo National Front (MNF) separatist movement gained momentum in the Mizo Hills (now Mizoram), the Indian Air Force (IAF) intervened to support the Army’s efforts. The MNF’s “Operation Jericho” aimed to seize control of Aizawl and the region. Brigadier Rustom Zal Kabraji led the Army operations while the IAF’s 29 Squadron (Toofani aircraft) and 14 Squadron (Hunters) played a pivotal role. Air attacks helped the Army reclaim areas, and innovative tactics evolved to overcome rebel resistance. IAF personnel like Flt Lt SK Sareen and Gp Capt Jasper Bouche received honors for their roles in this significant counterinsurgency operation.
