Operation NARCOS Seizes Narcotics Worth Rs 7.4 Crore

The recent headline of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) recovering narcotics products valued over Rs. 7.40 Crore under Operation NARCOS brings forward an essential discourse on the rising narcotics issue in India. This article delves into the operation details, the role and history of the Railway Protection Force, and some of its notable initiatives undertaken for public safety.

Understanding Operation NARCOS

Launched in June 2022, Operation “NARCOS” is a month-long pan-India drive against the smuggling of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances via rail networks. Responding to the alarming rise in the narcotics trade, the RPF stepped up its checks on trains and identified black spots across the country. These efforts were coordinated with the Narcotics Control Bureau and other law enforcement agencies to target drug peddlers involved in the illegal trade.

The Role and History of the Railway Protection Force

The RPF, an Armed Force of the Union of India, operates as a security force under the ownership of Indian Railways, under the Ministry of Railways. The force’s inception dates back to 1882 when various railway companies appointed their own guards to assure the protection of railway property. By an enactment of Parliament in 1957, the force was declared statutory, followed by recognition as an Armed Force of the Union of India in 1985. Today, the RPF is entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding railway property.

Noteworthy Initiatives by the RPF

Beyond Operation NARCOS, the RPF has launched several other initiatives to enhance the safety of passengers and combat crime.

Under Operation AAHT, special teams are deployed on long-distance trains/routes, focusing on rescuing victims, particularly women and children, exploited by traffickers.

In addition, the Meri Saheli initiative, launched as a pilot project in the South Eastern Railway in September 2020, underscores the safety of women passengers. Subsequently, it was extended to all zones due to its effectiveness.

The RPF also assists state police in fighting against passenger crime through an endeavor termed “Operation Yatri Surakhsha”.

Another significant mission undertaken by the RPF is Operation Nanhe Farishte. Under this operation, the force saved 1,045 children who were found alone or were abandoned at railway stations.

The relentless efforts and initiatives of the RPF undoubtedly contribute significantly to passenger safety and the fight against illegal activities on India’s extensive rail networks. The success of Operation NARCOS is a testament to this fact.
