Padma Awards

The Padma Award is one of the highest citizen awards in India. They fall into three categories which are Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. They are awarded in several areas such as social welfare, public affairs, education, arts and literature, technology and natural sciences, industry and trade, medicine, sports and public services.

Who are eligible for the awards?

All Indians, regardless of caste, gender, race, age or occupation, are equally eligible for the award. Civil servants (excluding scientists and doctors) are not eligible to receive these awards. As a general rule, prizes are not awarded after death (that is, after death). But, especially in the right cases, the government is consider presenting awards after death. In such cases, the person’s death must be recent, that is, within a year.

What is the rule for awarding the higher category of Padma Awards?

The higher category Padma Awards will only be awarded if 5 years have passed since the last award was awarded. However, the award committee may make mitigations for very suitable candidates. Recommendations from the state government and Union Territory are invited annually. The Padma Awards Committee is formed by the Prime minister of India. The Commission makes recommendations to the President as well as the Prime Minister. The President of India awards the Padma Award.

What is the limit of Padma Awards in a year?

Padma Awards awarded in a year must not exceed 120. This does not include Padma Awards given to foreigners or after death.

Where are the names of the Padma Awardees published?

The names of Padma Award winners will be published in the official bulletin of India which is named Gazette of India. Gazette of India is an open magazine that prints Indian legal documents and the Department of Publication which operates under the ambit of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs publishes it on a weekly basis. Winners’ names will be announced during the Republic Day celebration. However, at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the award is awarded. Ceremony usually takes place in April or March.

Conclusion

Winners cannot use the award name as a prefix or suffix. The name of the award cannot be used with the name on books, posters, invitations or letterheads. Winners lose if they do so. Cash bonuses in the form of discounts (such as trains and planes) have nothing to do with these bonuses.

The Padma Vibhushan Award is awarded for outstanding achievements. The Padma Bhushan Award is awarded for high-ranked outstanding service. Padma Shri is awarded for outstanding service in all areas.
