The Indian Prime Minister, on the occasion of Teacher’s Day 2022, has introduced a novel initiative known as the PM SHRI Schools (PM ScHools for Rising India). This scheme is anticipated to function as a testing ground for the newly implemented National Education Policy (NEP). In its initial phase, the program aims to upgrade 14,500 schools.
The Significance of Teachers’ Day in India
Teachers’ Day has been annually celebrated on September 5 since 1962, to acknowledge and honour the contributions of educators, including teachers, researchers, and professors in India. The tradition was established after Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962 and suggested that his birthday could be commemorated as Teachers’ Day.
About Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
Born to a Telugu family in Tiruttani town of Tamil Nadu on September 5, 1888, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan studied philosophy at Christian College, Madras. Upon completing his degree, he served as a Professor of Philosophy at Madras Presidency College and later at the University of Mysore. He held several prestigious positions including the first Vice-President of India from 1952 to 1962, the second President of India from 1962 to 1967, and the Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1952. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1984 for his significant contributions to Indian philosophy and education.
National Teachers Awards 2022
On Teacher’s Day 2022, the President of India conferred the National Teachers Awards to 45 exceptional teachers from diverse states including Telangana, Maharashtra, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. The Ministry of Education organizes this function annually to honour the best teachers in the country. Each winner is recognized with a certificate of merit, a cash reward of Rs 50,000, and a silver medal.
The Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) Yojana
The PM SHRI Schools initiative is a government-sponsored program designed to upgrade and develop over 14500 schools nationwide. The scheme targets the enhancement of schools managed by the Central Government/ State/ UT Government/ local bodies. These schools will serve as models showcasing all elements of the National Education Policy 2020 and offer mentorship to other schools nearby.
Pedagogy and Infrastructure
These schools will adopt pedagogical strategies that are experiential, holistic, integrated, play/toy-based, inquiry-driven, discovery-oriented, learner-centred, discussion-based, flexible, and enjoyable. The curriculum is designed to promote proficiency in learning outcomes for every child in every grade. Assessments will be based on conceptual understanding and real-life application of knowledge, with modern infrastructure including labs, smart classrooms, libraries, sports equipment, art rooms, etc.
Green Schools Initiative
In addition to improving academic quality, these schools will also focus on being environmentally friendly. Measures will be implemented for water conservation, waste recycling, energy-efficient infrastructure, and integration of organic lifestyle in the curriculum.
