PM Commemorates Scientists on National Technology Day

National Technology Day is a significant celebration in India that honors the achievements of Indian scientists and engineers. The Prime Minister recently expressed his deep appreciation towards these scientific pioneers and their groundbreaking work, specifically highlighting their success in the Pokhran tests in 1998.

National Technology Day: A Brief Overview

National Technology Day has been observed annually on May 11th since 1999. The day was christened by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to celebrate the remarkable scientific and technological feats of Indian scientists and engineers. It’s a day dedicated to the innovations and advancements that have propelled India to the forefront of global technological progress.

The Integral Role of the Technology Development Board of India

The Technology Development Board of India, a statutory body under the Ministry of Science and Technology, plays a key part in honoring this day. Each year, the board commemorates National Technology Day by presenting individuals with the National Award to recognize their outstanding contributions to science and technology in India. This year, the spotlight is on the theme ‘Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future’.

Pokhran Tests: Marking a Milestone in Indian Nuclear Technology

One of the key reasons behind the significance of National Technology Day is the successful testing of nuclear bombs in Pokhran on May 11th, 1998. On this historic day, India successfully test-fired its Shakti-1 nuclear missile in an operation known as Pokhran-II or Operation Shakti. The Indian Army carried out this test at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan.

This marked the second successful nuclear test in India’s history, following Pokhran-I, codenamed Operation Smiling Buddha, in May 1974.

Other Noteworthy Achievements: Trishul Missile and Hansa – 3

In addition to the Pokhran-II tests, India also celebrated other technological successes on May 11th, 1998. The country conducted a successful test firing of the Trishul Missile, a surface-to-air short-range missile. Moreover, India test-flew its first indigenous aircraft – the ‘Hansa – 3’.

National Technology Day thus acts as a testament to India’s strides in the field of science and technology. From breakthroughs in nuclear technology to advancements in aerospace, this day serves as a yearly reminder of India’s technological prowess and the scientists and engineers who have made these achievements possible.
