The 114th Thevar Jayanthi, or Guru Pooja, was observed on 30th October, with the Prime Minister paying tribute to Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar. This annual event marks the birth anniversary of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, a spiritual leader and freedom fighter known for his contributions to society and politics.
About Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar
Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was born on 30th October, 1908, in Pasumpon, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. He is revered as a deity among the Mukulathor community, which includes the Kallar, Maravar, and Ahambadiar groups. Traditional offerings are still made to his statue during yearly celebrations.
Thevar was a staunch critic of traditional Hinduism and its support for Varnashrama. He strongly opposed religious superstitions and narrow-mindedness, advocating instead for an open and accepting society.
Connection with Subhash Chandra Bose and the All India Forward Bloc
As a socialist and colleague of Subhash Chandra Bose, Thevar held a prominent position in the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB), serving as the national deputy chairman from 1952. He was thrice elected to the national parliamentary constituency of this party.
The AIFB, which aimed to unite all radical elements of the Congress party, was founded by Subhash Chandra Bose in May 1939. Despite being declared illegal in June 1942, the party continued to strive for Indian independence based on principles of equality and social justice.
Thevar’s Advocacy for Social Reform
Thevar demonstrated support for the Temple Entry Authorisation and Indemnity Act of 1939, which allowed Dalits to enter Hindu temples. He made significant contributions to the movement, aiding activist A. Vaidyanatha Iyer in leading Dalits into the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai in July of the same year.
Opposition to the Criminal Tribes Act
Thevar also protested against the Criminal Tribes Act (CTA) of 1920, which targeted his own Mukulathor community by labeling them as habitual criminals. His relentless campaigning eventually led to the repeal of this act in 1946.
The Demise of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar
Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar passed away on 30th October 1963 due to illness. His legacy continues to be celebrated each year on his birth anniversary, with commemorations paying respect to his contributions towards the fight for freedom and equality.
