PM Launches Gandhinagar-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express 2.0

Recently, the Prime Minister made headlines when he inaugurated the Gandhinagar-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express 2.0 at Gujarat’s Gandhinagar station. This adds a new chapter to the successful story of the Vande Bharat trains that have already been running between New Delhi and Varanasi, and from New Delhi to Katra. The Vande Bharat trains represent a significant step forward for Indian Railways in terms of speed and passenger convenience.

Introducing the Vande Bharat Trains

Vande Bharat trains are homegrown semi-high speed, self-propelled trains often acknowledged as the successor to the Rajdhani trains concerning superior speed and comfort levels. The first model was manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, costing approximately Rs. 100 crore.

These trains signify India’s initial trial at adapting train set technology, a deviation from the traditional method of using separate locomotives to haul passenger coaches. Despite being complex, the train configuration is faster, easier in maintenance, more energy-efficient, and provides greater flexibility during operations.

Characteristic Features of Vande Bharat Trains

During their development stage, the Vande Bharat trains were referred as ‘Train 18’. These operate without a locomotive, relying instead on a distributed traction power technology, which powers each car of the train set.

The trains can reach top speeds of up to 160 kmph due to quicker acceleration and deceleration, effectively reducing journey times by 25% to 45%. Additionally, they’re equipped with an intelligent braking system with power regeneration abilities, which contributes to better energy efficiency and, consequently, cost and environmental effectiveness.

A Deeper Look at The Vande Bharat Express 2.0

The Vande Bharat Express 2.0 carries a range of superior and aircraft-like travel experiences. Notably, it comes with advanced safety features, including the KAVACH – an indigenously developed Train Collision Avoidance System.

The new Vande Bharat design also incorporates a photo-catalytic ultraviolet air purification system, installed in the Roof-Mounted Package Unit (RMPU) for improved air quality. This enhanced focus on safety and passenger comfort demonstrates the dedication towards providing a remarkable train journey for passengers.

Conclusion

The launch of the Vande Bharat Express 2.0 symbolizes a significant milestone in India’s railway journey, marking a fusion of speed, comfort, and technological advancement. As these trains redefine the Indian rail travel experience, they also highlight the potential that ‘Make in India’ holds for driving indigenous manufacturing and technological development. It’s a testament to how far Indian Railways has come and holds promise for the future.
