Pragyan Rover Enters Lunar Night Sleep Mode

The Prayan Rover, an integral component of the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, has successfully entered sleep mode. Scheduled to awaken on September 22, 2023, the rover will hibernate through the lunar night, a period equivalent to approximately 14 earthly days. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) states that placing the rover in this dormant state is crucial for its survival amidst temperatures that can plummet below -200°C during this nocturnal phase. The lander and rover depend on solar panels for power generation and battery charging during the lunar day and must withstand the harsh lunar night conditions.

Designed to endure the harsh lunar environment, the rover’s sleep mode signifies its ability to adapt to the moon’s extreme temperatures. If the rover fails to reawaken from its hibernational state, it will remain on the moon, symbolizing India’s lunar expedition.

Power Generation for Prayan Rover: Solar Dependence

Generating power on the moon poses unique challenges. Specifically, the lander and rover are equipped with solar panels to harness the sun’s energy during the lunar day. This energy is used to recharge the rover’s batteries, providing vital power for operations and scientific experiments.

Moving on to the southern part of India, Karnataka is taking significant strides to combat dementia, a concerning health issue sweeping the nation. Dementia comprises several diseases that impede memory, cognition, and behavioural patterns, thereby interfering with daily activities. Alzheimer’s disease remains the most widespread form of dementia. In India, the prevalence rate for dementia is approximately 7.4% among citizens aged 60 or above.

Estimates suggest that around 9 lakh individuals in India suffer from dementia. Forecasts predict a dramatic increase in these figures, rising from 88 lakh in 2016 to a staggering 1.7 crores by 2036.

Factors Contributing to Dementia

Several risk factors have been linked with the onset of dementia, including smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, social isolation, head injuries, and certain health conditions such as diabetes, hearing loss, depression, obesity, and hypertension.

Finally, recent studies illustrate shared neural mechanisms in spatial navigation and social interaction among Egyptian fruit bats. These animals utilise their hippocampus—an area of the brain—for navigating their environments and forming mental ‘maps.’

Navigational Behaviours in Bats

The studies found that bats establish resting spots within their environments and consistently follow similar paths between these locations. Furthermore, bats display strong propensities for interacting with specific peer bats, pointing to an interesting overlap between spatial navigation and social dynamics.

Despite the vast differences between lunar rovers, dementia in India, Cartesian coordinates, and bat behaviour, each illustrates intriguing facets of science, health, and natural phenomena. These findings underscore the richness and complexity of the world around us.
