In recent news, the President of India unveiled the 34th Surajkund International Crafts Mela. The event took place in Surajkund, Haryana on February 1, 2020. The event is a joint initiative of the Surajkund Mela Authority & Haryana Tourism, and is facilitated by Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture, and External Affairs.
Unique Features of Surajkund Mela
Recognized for its uniqueness, the Surajkund Mela exhibits the richness and diversity of India’s artisanal works. It serves as a platform to showcase Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and the country’s cultural fabric. Notably, it is recognized as the world’s largest crafts fair.
Origin and Intent of the Surajkund Mela
The inception of the Surajkund Mela dates back to 1987. Its primary objective was to nurture the skills of artisans who leveraged indigenous technology. However, these artisans were facing difficulties due to the influx of cheaper machine-made imitations.
The Evolution of Surajkund Mela
Since its origin as a platform for local artisans, the Surajkund Mela has seen significant changes over time. In 2013, the fair was elevated to an international level, welcoming participants and visitors from across the globe.
Theme State and Partner Nation of the Year 2020
Every year, the Surajkund Mela introduces a ‘Theme State’ and a ‘Partner Nation’. For 2020, Himachal Pradesh was chosen as the ‘Theme State’. Simultaneously, Uzbekistan was announced as the ‘Partner Nation’.
Participation Record
In 2015, the Mela registered a record participation of 20 countries. That year, Lebanon was named the partner nation, and Chhattisgarh was selected as the theme state.
Commemorative Structure
A unique tradition of the Surajkund Mela is the construction of a replica of a popular monument by each theme state. This replica is displayed as a Commemorative Structure within the Mela Grounds, adding an element of visual interest and cultural significance to the fair.
First Participation by England
The year 2020 also marked a significant milestone for the Surajkund Mela as England participated in the event for the first time.
