Recently, the Prime Minister has marked a significant step in the development of Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi by inaugurating Phase 1 of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor Project. This monumental endeavour, known for being the first considerable transformation since 1780 AD, brings a multitude of new establishments and improvements to this historical city.
Project Overview
The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor Project is an extensive undertaking that aims to enhance the religious and cultural experience for both residents and visitors alike. The project’s first phase has seen the opening of 23 different installations which include a tourist facilitation center, Vedic Kendra, Mumukshu Bhavan, Bhogshala, a city museum, viewing gallery, and food court among others.
This enormous project first started gaining momentum when its foundation was set in March 2019. The main concept behind this plan was to make it easier for pilgrims to access the holy sites without having to navigate the crowded streets. Thus, creating a straightforward pathway for those trying to reach the Ganga for the sacred ritual of offering water at the temple.
During the execution of this project, over 40 ancient temples were rediscovered. These hidden gems have been carefully restored, ensuring no alterations were made to their original structures.
Historical Significance and Connection with Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor directly links the legendary Kashi Vishwanath Temple with the river Ganga’s ghats. Its historical significance is amplified due to its connection with the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of Hinduism’s most revered sites dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, considered the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva. Located on the western bank of the Ganga, the corridor further enhances the temple’s accessibility.
Boosting Tourism
This project stands to significantly contribute to the city’s tourism, offering a more convenient and comfortable experience for travellers and pilgrims. The project includes various amenities that help improve visitor experience such as wider and cleaner roads to accommodate larger crowds, enhanced illumination with bright streetlights for improved visibility during evenings, and access to clean drinking water, further enhancing the city’s appeal for spiritual journeys and cultural tourism.
