Prime Minister Inaugurates Sant Tukaram Shila Mandir

The Prime Minister of India recently inaugurated the Sant Tukaram Shila Mandir, a temple dedicated to a slab of stone (Shila) known for its historical and spiritual significance, in Dehu, Pune. This Shila holds immense importance; it is here that the revered saint, Sant Tukaram, meditated for 13 uninterrupted days. For centuries, this sacred rock has marked the commencement of Wari, an annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur.

The Historical Significance of Shila Mandir

The Shila Mandir is located within the premises of the Dehu Sansthan temple. The temple gets its name from the Shila or rock, believed to be the exact spot where Sant Tukaram meditated for nearly two weeks without breaks. This period of intense meditation has resulted in the rock acquiring a holy status and now serves as a significant pilgrimage point for the followers of the Wakari sect.

Understanding Who Was Sant Tukaram

Sant Tukaram was a prominent figure in the Warkari sect, a sect widespread across Maharashtra. He had a profound influence on the religious and cultural fabric of the region. Sant Tukaram gained fame through his Abhanga devotional poetry and helped promote community-oriented worship through spiritual songs, also known as Kirtans. His contribution to Marathi literature is immense; he created a unique fusion of folk stories with spiritual themes in Abhanga poetry.

Sant Tukaram’s Philosophy

In his spiritual journey, Sant Tukaram was greatly influenced by four other Bhakti Sants, namely Namdev, Dnyaneshwar, Kabir, and Eknath. Their teachings played a crucial role in shaping his spiritual development. Sant Tukaram’s teachings were primarily Vedanta-based, encompassing the essence of eternal truths and ultimate knowledge.

Sant Tukaram’s Contribution to Social Reform

Apart from his contribution to the spiritual world, Sant Tukaram is also known for his efforts towards social reform. He propagated the concept of a casteless society and denounced the importance given to rituals. His rejection of established societal norms catalyzed a significant social movement. Through his Abhangs, Sant Tukaram challenged the Brahmanical dominance prevalent in the society of his time.

This inauguration of the Sant Tukaram Shila Mandir by the Prime Minister aims to celebrate and pay respect to the life and teachings of Sant Tukaram, a beacon of spiritual wisdom who influenced not only spirituality but also initiated social reforms.
