Prime Minister Launches ‘Mission DefSpace’ at DefExpo

The defence landscape in India is undergoing transformative changes with new initiatives, technologies, and policies. The recent launch of ‘Mission DefSpace’, the release of the fourth Defence Indigenisation List, and the unveiling of a newly designed indigenous trainer aircraft underscore this progress.

Mission DefSpace: An Ambitious Initiative

Recently launched by the Prime Minister at the ongoing DefExpo, Mission DefSpace represents an ambitious effort to cultivate unique solutions for the Indian air force, Navy, and Army in the space sector through local businesses and start-ups. The initiative comprises 75 challenges aimed at eliciting innovative solutions based on defence needs in the space domain. It invites start-ups, innovators, and private sector entities to propose solutions for problems related to both offensive and defensive capabilities. The mission is geared towards developing a range of military applications for space warfare that can also be extended to friendly foreign nations.

Indigenisation of Defence: Promoting Self-Reliance

Indigenisation in the defence realm refers to the ability to manufacture defence equipment within the country, serving a dual purpose of fostering self-reliance and reducing import dependence. This objective is integral to the operations of the Department of Defence Production as well as critical bodies like the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), and private organisations.

Despite being one of the world’s largest arms importers, the long-term aim is to promote indigenous production. The armed forces are projected to spend approximately USD 130 billion on defence purchases over the coming five years.

Fourth Indigenisation List: A Future-Focused Endeavour

The fourth Indigenisation List, released recently, places particular emphasis on equipments and systems currently under development and slated to transition into firm orders within the next five to 10 years. This list provides transparency regarding the prospective needs of the armed forces, enabling local defence industries to ascertain trends and prepare requisite research, development, and manufacturing capacities.

The significance of such indigenisation extends beyond reducing fiscal deficit and promoting domestic industry. It can bolster security against external threats, generate employment, ignite patriotism, and foster a stronger sense of national integrity and sovereignty among the Indian Forces.

HTT-40 Indigenous Trainer Aircraft: A Leap in Technology

One recent advancement in indigenous technology is the HTT-40 (Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40) trainer aircraft. Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF), the aircraft is set to replace the ageing fleet of HAL HPT-32 Deepak trainers currently serving the IAF. Notable for its best-in-class fuel economy and power rating, the HTT-40 possesses impressive performance capabilities, including short take-off distance, high climb rate, and a maximum speed of 450km/h.

While India’s defence sector continues its push towards self-reliance, these recent developments underline a commitment to boosting indigenous innovation and production. This progress promises to have a significant impact not only on India’s defence capabilities but also on its broader geopolitical and socio-economic landscape.
