India’s first indigenously developed mRNA vaccine targeting the Omicron variant of Covid-19, GEMCOVAC-OM, priced at ₹2,292 per dose, offers a ray of hope. Developed by Gennova, the vaccine can be stored within a 2-8 degree Celsius range, making it suitable for storage in regular refrigerators. GEMCOVAC-OM activates the immune system to produce antibodies that ward off an infection. The key advantage of this vaccine is that it can be administered through the needle-free PharmaJet system, giving it directly into the skin. Despite their fragility, mRNA vaccines are known for their swift adaptability to emerging variants and have a wide scope of use across multiple diseases.
