India, a vibrant country renowned for its diverse culture and unity, commemorates a special week known as the Qaumi Ekta Week or National Integration Week. This event is observed all over the country from the 19th to the 25th of November with the primary aim to foster and reinforce the spirit of communal harmony, national integration, and cultural pride.
National Integration Day
The week-long celebration commences with National Integration Day on the 19th of November. This day specifically emphasizes themes of secularism, anti-communalism, and non-violence summarizing the ethos of India’s unity in diversity.
Welfare of Minorities Day
On the 20th of November, Welfare of Minorities Day is observed highlighting the 15 Point Programme launched by UPA in 2005. This program aims to ensure the welfare of religious minorities, enhancing their educational and employment opportunities, improving living conditions, and protecting them from communal riots.
Linguistic Harmony Day
Following that comes Linguistic Harmony Day on the 21st of November. This day enlightens people about India’s linguistic heritage, encouraging every region to appreciate the linguistic diversity in other parts of India.
Weaker Sections Day
Subsequently, the 22nd of November is dedicated to Weaker Sections Day. It brings forth the various schemes implemented by different governments to uplift SCs/STs and economically weaker sections, focusing mainly on the distribution of surplus land to landless labourers.
Cultural Unity Day
The 23rd of November is celebrated as Cultural Unity Day. The day showcases the Indian tradition of unity amidst diversity, promoting cultural conservation and integration.
Women’s Day
Women’s Day is observed on the 24th of November, emphasizing the prominent role of women in Indian society and their significant contribution towards nation-building.
Conservation Day
Lastly, Conservation Day is observed on the 25th of November, accentuating the need for environmental conservation and spreading awareness about the same.

The National Foundation for Communal Harmony
Parallel to Qaumi Ekta Week, the National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH), an autonomous organization operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, organizes the Communal Harmony Campaign. This foundation also observes the Communal Harmony Flag Day on the 25th of November, encapsulating the entire week’s spirit.
Parambikulam Tiger Reserve
Located amidst the Anamalai hills and Nelliampathy hills of the Southern Western Ghats, the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve in Palakkad District of Kerala is a biodiversity hotspot. A recent survey identified 221 varieties of butterflies, including 11 endemic species in the reserve. One such species, the Buddha Peacock or Buddha Mayoori, is the State butterfly of Kerala.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in the rain shadow region on the eastern slope of the Western Ghats provides ecological connectivity between the Anamalai Tiger Reserve and Eravikulam National Park. Recently, the Sri Lankan Frogmouth, usually found on the western side of the Western Ghats, was sighted here for the first time. It lays only one egg per year following the mating season in April-May. Researchers are presently working on a project to study this bird’s habitat and create a favorable environment for its survival.
