The Race Across India is a unique cycling race, spanning a distance of 3,655 kilometres from Srinagar to Kanyakumari. It is the longest ever cycle race in Asia, and has been accorded the Asian Ultracycling Championship by the World Ultracycling Association.
Participants
As many as 29 cyclists have taken part in this challenging race, with Geeta Rao being the only female participant. She is India’s first differently-abled Super Randonneur, and earlier won a silver medal at the Para Cycling Championship in 2022. Geeta lost her leg due to polio at a young age, but this did not deter her from pursuing her passion for cycling.
The Race
The race began from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It will traverse through various terrains, including the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and finally end in Kanyakumari.
The duration of the race is approximately 15 days, with riders expected to cycle around 250-300 kilometres each day. The cyclists have to contend with diverse and challenging terrain, including steep climbs, descents, and long stretches of flat roads. They also have to battle weather conditions such as heat, rain, and wind.
