The Tamil Nadu government announced major development works for the historic Chola Gangam lake in 2025. Situated near the Sri Brahadeeswarar temple in Gangaikondacholapuram, it covers 700 acres. The structure controls water flow during the Northeast monsoon. Restoration and Irrigation Benefits
The government allocated ₹12 crore for strengthening the tank’s banks. Renovation of sluices and channels will improve water regulation. Maintenance work will ensure the tank’s sustainability. Tourism Infrastructure Development
A separate budget of ₹7.25 crore is earmarked for tourism-related activities. Plans include building an information centre and a park. Perimeter walls and surveillance cameras will ensure security. Museum Project and Cultural Celebrations
Since 2021, Tamil Nadu has celebrated Rajendra Chola I’s birth anniversary on Aadi Thiruvathirai. The government is also establishing a museum near the site. The museum will cover 10 acres and cost ₹22.10 crore. Preliminary work for the museum is underway. This will further preserve and showcase Chola history and artefacts.
