Ramari?s beaked whale

Ramari’s beak whale is a medium-sized whale. It belongs to Mesopolodon genus. Mesopolodon eueu is the scientific name of this whale. From the Khwedam word this name has been taken. Khwedam is a popular language in Angola, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. The word eueu, in Khwedam, means big fish. Since, most of the stranding?s of these whales are in South African territories hence, the whale?s scientific name has been named after Khwedam language. The name also pays homage to whale expert Ramari Stewart.

Highlights

The length of the whale is 5 meters. They are mostly found in the deep sea and are big in size. Even though they are distributed across the globe, still their natural history is not well understood. It dives into the sea to a depth of 1000 meters in search of food.

Discovery

The beaked whale Ramari has been known in human history since the year 2011. However, it was discovered as a new species in the month of October, 2021. In the year 2011, a female whale was washed ashore in the country of New Zealand. Scientists thought that this whale belonged to the True Beaked Whale species but, in the year 2021 it was revealed that the female whale is different and belongs to a new species. This newly discovered species was given the name Ramari’s beak whale. Ramari beaked whales are found in South Africa Australia and New Zealand.

Difference between True Beaked Whale and Ramari Beaked Whale

The True Beaked Whales skull in the Northern Hemisphere is quite different from the skull in the Southern Hemisphere. The southern and northern hemisphere whales separated 500,000 years ago thus making the Ramari?s beaked whale a new completely different species.
