Regional Conference on ‘Drug Smuggling and National Security’

The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, leading the charge, is set to chair the Regional Conference on ‘Drug Smuggling and National Security’ in New Delhi. The conference aims to address the pressing issue of drug smuggling and its impact on national security. As a part of this significant event, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will destroy approximately 1,44,000 kg of drugs in various parts of the country. The joint efforts of the NCB and Anti-Narcotics Task Forces (ANTFs) from all states will coordinate the drug destruction process.

Combating Drug Smuggling: A Collective Effort:

Drug smuggling poses a severe threat to a nation’s security and socio-economic well-being. To tackle this menace effectively, the conference brings together law enforcement agencies, policymakers, and experts in the field of narcotics control. The joint efforts aim to strengthen the nation’s fight against drug trafficking and its adverse implications.

Massive Drug Destruction Drive:

A significant highlight of the conference is the destruction of a staggering 1,44,000 kg of drugs. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Anti-Narcotics Task Forces (ANTFs) from various states will join hands to coordinate this large-scale drug destruction initiative. This step sends a powerful message that India is determined to eradicate the drug menace from its roots.

Drug Destruction in Different States:

The drug destruction drive will be carried out in different states across the country. NCB units in Hyderabad, Indore, and Jammu are set to destroy 6590 kg, 822 kg, and 356 kg of drugs, respectively. Law enforcement agencies in different states will collectively destroy 144,122 kg of drugs. Notable quantities of drugs to be destroyed include 1,486 kg in Assam, 229 kg in Chandigarh, 25 kg in Goa, 4,277 kg in Gujarat, 2,458 kg in Haryana, 4,069 kg in Jammu and Kashmir, 103,884 kg in Madhya Pradesh, 159 kg in Maharashtra, 1,803 kg in Tripura, and 4,049 kg in Uttar Pradesh.

‘Zero Tolerance’ Policy Against Narcotics:

The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has adopted a resolute ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy against narcotics. This unwavering stance reflects the country’s commitment to curbing drug smuggling, protecting its citizens, and preserving national security.

Exceeding Targets: A Testimony to Commitment:

Between June 2022 and July 2023, the NCB and ANTFs have collectively destroyed around 876,554 kg of seized drugs worth Rs 9,580 crore. This impressive achievement exceeds the initial targets by more than 11 times. The remarkable success of the drug destruction campaign underscores the dedication and effectiveness of the authorities in their fight against narcotics.

Towards a Drug-Free India:

The drug destruction drive is not an isolated event but a crucial component of a sustained and comprehensive campaign to achieve a drug-free India. By destroying these large quantities of drugs, the authorities aim to disrupt drug supply chains, dismantle smuggling networks, and reduce drug-related crimes significantly.

To effectively combat drug smuggling and its impact on national security, a holistic approach is imperative. The Regional Conference on ‘Drug Smuggling and National Security’ serves as a platform to discuss and implement multifaceted strategies, including intelligence-sharing, capacity-building, and international cooperation, to tackle the drug menace comprehensively.
