SAGE Project: Boosting Elderly Care Start-ups

The SAGE (Seniorcare Aging Growth Engine) project is an initiative by the Central Government of India aimed at enhancing the lives of the elderly population. This project focuses on sourcing innovative solutions that can assist seniors in their daily lives. The Indian government recognizes the necessity for advanced and accessible elderly care solutions, given the country’s rapidly aging population. As a response, the SAGE project has been designed to support start-ups that are creating products and services tailored to the needs of the elderly.

Objective of the SAGE Project

The primary objective of the SAGE project is to identify start-ups that are developing innovative products, solutions, and services specifically for the senior citizen demographic. The project aims to evaluate and verify these initiatives to ensure they meet certain standards of quality and effectiveness. Once approved, the project seeks to aggregate these services and make them easily accessible to the elderly. The end goal is to deliver top-notch solutions that can improve the quality of life for older adults in India.

Selection and Funding of Start-ups

To become a part of the SAGE project, start-ups must undergo a rigorous selection process. An independent screening committee comprised of experts in the field is responsible for the selection of eligible start-ups. These experts evaluate each start-up based on various criteria to ensure they align with the project’s goals and have the potential to positively impact the lives of the elderly.

Once a start-up is selected, it becomes eligible for significant financial support from the government. A maximum fund of Rs.1 crore, which is equivalent to approximately 10 million Indian Rupees, will be provided as one-time equity to each selected start-up. This substantial funding is intended to help these start-ups scale their operations and enhance their offerings for the benefit of the elderly population.

The SAGE Portal Launch

In a move to bolster the SAGE project, the Central Government launched the SAGE portal. This online platform serves as a one-stop-shop for elderly care products and services that have been recognized and approved by the SAGE project. The portal is designed to be user-friendly, allowing seniors and their caregivers easy access to a variety of resources and solutions.

The SAGE portal not only benefits the elderly but also provides a significant platform for the selected start-ups to showcase and deliver their services to a wider audience. By being featured on the portal, these start-ups gain visibility and credibility, which can lead to greater adoption of their services.

Application Process for Start-ups

The application process for start-ups wishing to join the SAGE project is set to open on June 5. Interested parties are encouraged to prepare for this date and gather all necessary information and documentation required for the application. The process is expected to be competitive, with many start-ups vying for the opportunity to receive government backing and the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of elderly citizens.

Start-ups applying for the SAGE project should demonstrate a clear understanding of the challenges faced by the elderly and offer innovative solutions that can address these issues. They should be prepared to present their business models, evidence of impact, and plans for scalability to the screening committee.

In summary, the SAGE project represents a significant step by the Indian government towards fostering an ecosystem of innovation and support around elderly care. By providing funding, a platform for visibility, and a structured selection process, the project aims to encourage start-ups to develop impactful solutions for the aging population, ultimately leading to a better quality of life for seniors across the country.
