SARAS Aajeevika Mela Empowers Rural Indian Women

The SARAS Aajeevika Mela and Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav, two initiatives by the Indian government, aim to transform rural India and promote national integration through cultural exchange. Both programs are geared towards providing a platform for rural women, artisans, and cultural practitioners to showcase their skills and products, thereby improving their livelihoods and contribution to the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

SARAS Aajeevika Mela: Empowering Rural Women

The SARAS Aajeevika Mela is an initiative by the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) under the Ministry of Rural Development. This program aims to empower rural women through Self Help Groups (SHGs), providing them a platform to demonstrate their skills, sell their products, and establish connections with bulk buyers. Products on display range from handicrafts and handlooms to natural food products.

Participation in the mela provides these women essential exposure to national-level audiences, allowing them to understand the demands and tastes of urban customers. The SARAS Aajeevika Mela takes an integrated approach to women’s empowerment, not just improving individual livelihoods but boosting rural communities as a whole.

Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav: Promoting Cultural Heritage

The Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, is a major cultural event that showcases India’s rich and varied cultural heritage. This includes everything from handicrafts, painting, sculpture, and performing arts in all their forms — be it folk, tribal, classical or contemporary.

Through this festival, the Ministry aims to reconnect the people, particularly the youth, with their indigenous culture, its myriad aspects, grandeur and historical importance. The event acts as a reflection of ‘India as a Nation’ over the millennia.

Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat: Fostering National Integration

The Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat program, launched in 2015, is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to promote engagement amongst the diverse cultures of India’s different states and Union Territories. This program hopes to enhance mutual understanding and bonding between people by celebrating the country’s unity in diversity and promoting a spirit of national integration through planned, year-long engagement initiatives between states.

This initiative offers a chance to showcase the rich heritage, culture, customs, and traditions of different states, fostering a sense of common identity among citizens. It also endeavours to establish long-term engagements and create an environment that promotes learning between states by sharing best practices and experiences.
