The recent development of a new product, Banana Grit or Granules, by scientists at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) in Pappanamcode, Kerala, has made headlines. This innovative product, derived from raw Nendran bananas, could provide numerous health benefits and potential income boosts for banana farmers. CSIR, as India’s largest research and development organization, continues to pave the way in scientific advancements.
Key Information About Banana Grit
Banana Grit and its byproduct have been identified as potentially beneficial to gut health. Introducing this product into a regular diet could contribute to maintaining overall well-being. The idea to develop Banana Grit came about due to the presence of resistant starch in bananas.
Starch is an organic chemical produced by all green plants. It appears as a soft, white, tasteless powder that is insoluble in cold water, alcohol, or other solvents. In humans and animals, starch from plants is converted into sugar molecules, which then supply energy to tissue cells.
The Significance of Banana Grit
By creating diverse products using bananas, farmers have a chance to get better prices for their harvest. Therefore, the introduction of Banana Grit can have a significant economic impact on those involved in banana farming. Besides its economic value, the improved gut health promoted by Banana Grit could also contribute to general well-being.
About Nendran Bananas
The Nendran bananas used to create Banana Grit are a specific variety known as Chengazhikodan Nendran Banana, or simply Chengazhikode Banana. This variety is one of the most popular traditional fruits cultivated in Thrissur district, Kerala. Known for its distinctive taste, bunch shape, and fruit color, Chengazhikodan Nendran Banana is primarily grown organically over a period of 13-14 months.
In 2014, the Chengalikodan Nendran banana from Kerala received a Geographical indication (GI) Tag. A GI tag identifies goods as originating from a particular place, where a certain quality, reputation or other characteristic of the product is essentially due to its geographical origin. This recognition has added more value and uniqueness to this specific type of banana, further promoting its cultivation for diverse uses like the production of Banana Grit.
