Smriti Irani launched first ever Brand & Logo for Indian Cotton

Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani launched the first ever Brand and Logo for Indian Cotton on Second World Cotton Day on October 7, 2020.

  • India’s premium cotton would now be known as ‘Kasturi Cotton’ in world cotton trade.
  • Kasturi Cotton brand will represent Whiteness, Softness, Brightness, lustre, Purity, Uniqueness and Indianness.


Cotton is a soft and fluffy staple fiber. It grows in a protective case around the seeds of the cotton plants. This fiber is almost pure cellulose. The cotton plant is a shrub. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions including the America, Egypt, Africa, and India. The biggest diversity of wild cotton species is found in Mexico which us followed by Australia and Africa.

Importance of cotton

Cotton is one of the important commercial crops of India. It provides livelihood to about six million cotton farmers.

India’s position

  • India is the second largest cotton producer in the world.
  • India is also the largest consumer of cotton in the world.

Cotton production

India produces six million tonnes of cotton every year. It shares about 23% of the world cotton. Further, India produces about 51% of the total organic cotton production of the world. Total cotton production around the world are about 25 million tonnes or 110 million bales annually. It accounts for 2.5% of the world’s arable land.

Cotton Corporation of India (CCI)

CCI is a Government of India agency which is engaged in activities related to trade, procurement, and export of cotton. This public sector agency is  responsible for equitable distribution of cotton among the different constituents of the industry and aid imports of cotton. It was established on 31 July 1970 under the Companies Act 1956. However, the CCI is governed by Textile Policy 1985 which is issued by the Ministry of Textiles. This year, CCI have made ever highest Minimum Support Price (MSP) operation of cotton. CCI has also opened 430 procurement centres in all cotton growing states. Payments are being made digitally to farmers’ account within 72 hours.
