South Korean Scientists Develop Efficient Microplastics Filter System

Scientists from South Korea recently made a significant breakthrough in the field of water purification technology. They developed an innovative system designed to filter out microplastics from water sources promptly and competently. In tests, this novel procedure proved to be highly effective.

Rapid Microplastic Filtration

The new purification system exhibited fantastic results during an experiment where it successfully eliminated more than 99.9% of contaminants from water within 10 seconds. The material used for this process is a relatively affordable polymer that exhibits exceptional adsorption performance and noteworthy photothermal properties.

Microplastics, which are plastics less than five millimeters in diameter that make them even smaller than a standard piece of jewelry pearl, can cause serious harm to our oceans and aquatic life. This innovative solution could potentially mitigate the damaging effects of these tiny pollutants.

Tribute to Mannathu Padmanabhan

On another note, the Prime Minister recently paid tribute to Sri Mannathu Padmanabhan to commemorate his birth anniversary. Born on 2nd January 1878 in Kerala, he was an Indian social reformer and freedom fighter.

Padmanabhan actively participated in key events such as the Vaikom (1924) and Guruvayoor (1924) temple-entry Satyagrahas and anti-untouchability movements. Known as a reformer and moral guide among the Nair community members, he received the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 1966 before his death on 25th February 1970.

VIRAASAT: A Celebration of Indian Saris

The Ministry of Textiles in India is set to host the second phase of the Sari Festival “VIRAASAT” from 3rd to 17th January 2023 in New Delhi. This event is a celebration of 75 handwoven Saris from around the country, showcasing the diverse textile traditions of different states such as Banarasi from Uttar Pradesh, Paithani from Maharashtra, Kanjeevaram from Tamil Nadu, Kasavu from Kerala, Jamdani from West Bengal, Bandhani from Gujarat, Muga from Assam, Phulkari from Punjab, and Kalamkari from Rajasthan.

DRDO’s 65th Foundation Day

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) celebrated its 65th Foundation Day on 1st January 2023. The organisation, founded in 1958 from the amalgamation of the Indian Army’s Technical Development Establishments (TDEs), the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP), and the Defence Science Organisation (DSO), consists of a network of more than 50 laboratories committed to developing innovative defence technologies.

These laboratories cover a wide range of disciplines including aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, and engineering systems. Some of their recent developments include the Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), ‘Pralay’, and the Controlled Aerial Delivery System, among other achievements.
