In an era where digital communication is paramount, the rise of cybercrime has prompted urgent responses from governments worldwide. Recently introduced the ‘International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System’, aimed at curbing the alarming trend of international spoofed calls that mislead recipients into believing they are receiving calls from legitimate Indian numbers. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications, reflects a growing awareness of the need to protect citizens from sophisticated cyber threats.

About Spoofed Calls

Spoofed calls occur when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to the recipient’s caller ID display. This manipulation can lead to consequences, including financial scams and identity theft. Interestingly, the concept of caller ID manipulation isn’t new; it has been exploited since the advent of telecommunication systems. However, the increasing sophistication of technology has made these tactics more accessible to cybercriminals.

The Mechanism of the Prevention System

The newly launched system operates through collaboration between the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). It employs advanced algorithms to identify and block incoming international calls that appear to originate from Indian numbers. This is achieved by analysing calling line identities (CLIs) and flagging those that do not match expected patterns. Remarkably, within just 24 hours of implementation, the system successfully identified and blocked approximately 1.35 crore spoofed calls, demonstrating its immediate efficacy.

Types of Cyber Crimes Associated with Spoofing

Spoofed calls have been linked to various nefarious activities. Cybercriminals often impersonate government officials, leading to scams where victims are coerced into providing personal information or funds. Additionally, there have been reports of threats involving disconnection of mobile services, fake arrests, and even drug-related scams—all facilitated through the guise of legitimate communication. The psychological manipulation involved in these crimes marks the need for robust protective measures.

Impact on Citizens and Telecom Industry

The introduction of this system is expected to substantially reduce the volume of spoofed calls reaching Indian subscribers. With the telecom industry being a critical component of the economy, ensuring the safety of communications is vital. The implementation of such a system not only protects consumers but also enhances the credibility of telecom providers. Interestingly, countries like the United States have faced similar challenges and have implemented their own measures, such as the TRACED Act, to combat robocalls and spoofing.
