Swachh Survekshan -2021

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, in the month of November, 2021, at the Swachh Amrit Mahotsav conferred awards to 342 cleanest cities of the country. This has been conferred under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs’ Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0.


Over 300 awards in various categories for cleanliness and hygiene efforts in metropolitan, urban territories and states has been awarded as part of various initiatives under Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has organized Swachh Amrit Mahotsav to felicitate various cities.

About Swachh Survekshan 2021

As part of Swachh Survekshan 2021, Indore won India’s “Cleanest Cities” award in the population category of more than 1, 00,000 for the fifth time in a row, followed by Surat and Vijayawada, respectively, in second and third place.

The cities of Vita, Lonavala and Sasvad in the state of Maharashtra were ranked first, second and third in the population category of less than 1,00,000.

Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, has emerged as the fastest city in the population category of over 1,00,000 and in the top 100 cities it is in 87th place. In other categories, the Best Ganga Town has been awarded to Varanasi and the India’s Cleanest Cantonment was conferred to Ahmedabad cantonment which was followed by Meerut and Delhi Cantonments.

As part of the Swachh Survekshan 2021, Chhattisgarh has been named India’s “cleanest state” for the third consecutive year having over 100 cities urban local bodies. Jharkhand has won India’s “cleanest state” for the second time in the category less than 100 urban local bodies. The fastest mover state under the category of more than 100 urban local bodies has been conferred to Karnataka and Mizoram was named fastest mover state having less than 100 urban local bodies.

As part of the Star Rating Protocol of Garbage Free Cities nine cities have been certified as five-star cities and 143 cities have been certified as three-star cities. Surat, Indore, Navi Mumbai, New Delhi Municipal Council, Mysuru, Ambikapur, Vijayawada, Noida and Patan are the nine 5-star rated cities.

For the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge, the highest performing cities are Indore, Nellore, Navi Mumbai and Dewas in different population categories of the 246 participating cities, with the highest performing states being Chandigarh and Chhattisgarh.


Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 was launched in the year 2020 with a focus on providing full access to hygiene for all. Over the years, Swachh Survekshan, the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey, has become an effective tool for innovation and best practices in hygiene and waste management in Indian cities. Swachh Survekshan 2021 is important as it is dedicated to Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and commemorates Safai Mitras’ efforts in the COVID-19 pandemic.
