Swachhta Saarthi Fellowship- Things to Know

The Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor of the government of India has launched Swachhta Saarthi Fellowship for the students from schools, colleges, and universities as well as community workers, self-help groups, and municipal and sanitary workers engaged in tackling waste management scientifically and sustainably.

Key Points

  • The fellowship is for school students from Class 9 to Class 12 and college students including undergraduate, postgraduate, and research students.
  • Applications are also invited from citizens working in the community and through SHGs, municipal or sanitary workers working beyond the specifications of their job requirements/descriptions.
  • The fellowship is an initiative to empower young innovators in community work of waste surveys, waste management, waste studies, and awareness campaigns as Swachhta Saarthis.
  • Up to 500 fellows will be recognized under the fellowship. The last date for applying to the fellowship is March 19, 2021.
  • The fellowship has been launched under the Union Government’s Waste to Wealth Mission.
  • The Waste to Wealth Mission is one of the nine national missions of the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC).
  • The role of young students from schools and colleges, and citizens working in the community through Self Help Groups (SHGs), or in an independent capacity, is key in sensitizing the communities towards waste management and offering innovative solutions for the conversion of waste to value.
  • This fellowship is aimed at encouraging students and people to improve their efforts for reducing waste in cities and rural areas.

The Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) along with Invest India management is responsible for facilitating the delivery and progress of all 9 national missions under PM-STIAC. Other missions include Natural Language Translation, quantum frontier, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, national biodiversity, bioscience for human health, deep ocean exploration, and AGNIi.
