East Germany
East Germany, officially known as the German Democratic Republic, existed from 1949 to 1990. It was a socialist state under Soviet influence. The capital was East Berlin. The economy was centrally planned. The Berlin Wall divided East and West Germany. It symbolised the Cold War divide. In 1990, East Germany reunified with West Germany. This marked the end of its distinct political identity.
