The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up for Tarang Shakti, a large-scale multinational air exercise that will bring together the air forces of 12 nations. This exercise, set to be the largest of its kind held in India, aims to foster stronger military collaboration and enhance interoperability among participating countries. Fighter jets, military transport aircraft, mid-air refuellers, and airborne warning and control systems will be deployed during the exercise.
The Largest Air Exercise in India
Tarang Shakti will mark a significant milestone for the Indian Air Force as it hosts the largest air exercise in the country. With the participation of multiple nations, the exercise provides a platform for strengthening military cooperation and sharing best practices among the air forces involved. The exercise is a testament to India’s growing prominence in the international defense arena.
Participating Countries and Assets
The multinational exercise will witness the participation of air forces from 12 nations. Countries such as France, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom are among those expected to take part. The exercise will involve the deployment of various assets, including fighter jets, military transport aircraft, mid-air refuellers, and airborne warning and control systems. This diverse range of assets will facilitate joint training, tactical coordination, and interoperability among the participating air forces.
Timing and Scope of Tarang Shakti
Tarang Shakti is scheduled to be held in October-November, providing ample time for planning and coordination among the participating nations. While six air forces will actively participate in the exercise, the remaining countries will attend as observers. The exercise will serve as an opportunity for the participating air forces to showcase their capabilities, enhance their operational skills, and deepen their understanding of each other’s tactics and procedures.
IAF’s Commitment to International Exercises
The Indian Air Force has been actively engaging in various international exercises, demonstrating its commitment to fostering collaboration with other air forces. Earlier in 2023, the IAF participated in Exercise Orion in France and INIOCHOS in Greece. These exercises have provided valuable opportunities for joint training, knowledge sharing, and enhancing interoperability among different air forces.
Joint Exercises for Enhanced Cooperation
In April, the IAF and the United States Air Force (USAF) conducted a joint exercise called Cope India-2023. This exercise, conducted across Kalaikunda, Panagarh, and Agra bases, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and interoperability between the two air forces. Joint exercises like Cope India-2023 strengthen the bonds between nations, foster mutual understanding, and contribute to regional stability.
International Engagement and Bastille Day Parade
Further emphasizing the IAF’s engagement with international partners, the Prime Minister of India will attend this year’s Bastille Day Parade in France. As part of the celebration, three Rafale fighter jets from the IAF will participate in the Bastille Day fly-past, showcasing the strong defense cooperation between India and France. This participation highlights the IAF’s commitment to international engagements and its growing global role.
